Tsugami/Rem Sales Consigns First 7-Axis Swiss Turn Machine to CCAT

June 3, 2015

Windsor, CT (June 3, 2015) Tsugami/Rem Sales, the exclusive North American importer of Precision Tsugami machine tools, announced today the consignment delivery of a Tsugami SS327-5AX high performance CNC precision lathe to the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. (CCAT) in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Tsugami/Rem Sales, the exclusive North American importer of Precision Tsugami machine tools, announced today the consignment delivery of a Tsugami SS327-5AX high performance CNC precision lathe to the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. (CCAT) in East Hartford, Connecticut.

“The Tsugami Swiss screw machine diversifies our capabilities at the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC),” stated Don Balducci, AMC interim director. “The Tsugami is a 7-axis machine that is capable of simultaneous 5-axis machining to produce complex aerospace and medical parts.”

The 32 mm capacity SS327-5AX is the first Swiss-style automatic lathe deployed to CCAT’s Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC). Unlike conventional CNC lathes, which hold the bar stock in a chuck while the cutting tool moves around it, Swiss-type lathes hold the bar stock in a sliding headstock, gradually exposing only the section of bar stock that is currently being machined. This process reduces machining vibration, known as “chatter” and improves the quality of the finished part.

The SS327-5AX performs continuous live cutting using a servo-driven, swiveling B-axis. The B-axis live tools (four front and four rear) machine in coordination with the C axis, delivering the ability to cut precise angles and sculpted contours on parts up to 32 mm in diameter.

“This is the ultimate Swiss-type lathe for machining complex parts,” Tsugami/Rem Sales Vice President Mike Mugno said. “We’re glad we’re able to share it with CCAT’s AMC customers.”
