Polygon Turning
Do You Need to Create Polygon Geometries from Bar Stock?
Milling these geometries can be extremely time consuming.
Polygon Cutting is Much Faster
Polygon Cutting: The Concept
The spindle and cutter are set in a 2:1 ratio.
Polygon Cutting: The Details
- The cutter path is elliptical.
- The “flatness” of the ellipse is directly proportional to the diameter of the cutter and the size of the polygon being generated.
- The larger the cutter is in relation to the polygon the “flatter” the flats will be.
Polygon Cutting
- Using the sub spindle improves rigidity
- Run-out can be adjusted out of the cutter eliminating the need for expensive inserts

The Benefits of Polygon Cutting
- Faster than milling.
- Better surface finishes.
- Eliminates expensive tooling.
- Better burr control.
- Simple set-up = quicker changeover.
