Polygon Turning

Do You Need to Create Polygon Geometries from Bar Stock?

Milling these geometries can be extremely time consuming.

Polygon Cutting is Much Faster

Polygon Cutting: The Concept

The spindle and cutter are set in a 2:1 ratio.

Polygon Cutting: The Details

  1. The cutter path is elliptical.
  2. The “flatness” of the ellipse is directly proportional to the diameter of the cutter and the size of the polygon being generated.
  3. The larger the cutter is in relation to the polygon the “flatter” the flats will be.

Polygon Cutting

  1. Using the sub spindle improves rigidity
  2. Run-out can be adjusted out of the cutter eliminating the need for expensive inserts

The Benefits of Polygon Cutting

  1. Faster than milling.
  2. Better surface finishes.
  3. Eliminates expensive tooling.
  4. Better burr control.
  5. Simple set-up = quicker changeover.
